About
Founded in 2016, Change the Type began as a school project and has since grown into a mission-driven nonprofit focused on changing the narrative around Black and Brown communities. Sparked by the negative media surrounding race relations, founder Sydney Ross created a PSA that challenged stereotypes and amplified positivity.

From that powerful first message, Change the Type was born—a nonprofit that uses storytelling, advocacy, and education to defy bias and inspire hope. We work to empower youth and elevate underrepresented voices through media, community events, and resource-sharing.

Our mission is simple: to celebrate Black and Brown excellence, equip the next generation with tools to thrive, and change the type of stories being told.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change we seek.
